In 2006, Karl Payne took the courageous step of acquiring a loan from the Student Revolving Loan Fund (SRLF) to pursue his Masters degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Manitoba. He later decided to transfer to the University of Toronto to complete that degree.

Admitting that adjusting was initially difficult, the former Combermere student divulged that his experience at the Cave Hill campus of the University of the West Indies (UWI), where he completed both a Bachelors Degree in Mathematics and Physics and a Masters Degree in Physics, made the transition to studying abroad relatively smooth.

Karl expressed that his main reason for choosing the SRLF loan was the benefit of lower interest rates than those of the commercial banks. He encourages others who need financial assistance in the pursuit of their studies to use the SRLF. He said, “ The low interest rates are favourable and it’s through the Ministry of Education, one of our local institutions. Why not support your own country?”

After conceding that the SRLF was integral in helping him to get where he is right now, particularly where funding is concerned, Karl, age thirty one (31), expects to see himself in a Senior Management position in the near future.

Karl concluded by emphasizing to those seeking to further their education, that there is a need to be disciplined and determined, to be prepared to work through adversity and to stick to it no matter what! Words that are not only relevant to studies, but to life as well
