It Worked for Me! A Learning Experience for Corey by SRLF

Corey Sandiford found his dream in France when he realised that the University of Westminster had a Diplomatic Academy of London Institution, which has a satellite campus located in Paris. Corey was lucky enough to stumble upon a Masters in Diplomatic Studies within the busy streets of central France. After meeting with the Head of the Department of the institution and realising the full benefits of the programme, Corey went about seeking financing for his new educational goal.

For him, the hardest part of the Student Revolving Loan Fund (SRLF) process was persuading the loan officers that the degree was marketable. He had completed a first degree in Languages, and wanted to do this programme to supplement the qualification. However, the loan officers were concerned that he didn't have enough experience, and would have difficulty finding a job upon his return to Barbados. "I did my own research, and spoke to some people at Foreign Affairs", Sandiford commented, "then I formulated an argument as to why I should be granted the loan". His determination paid off, as the loan officers' fears were put to rest, and they quickly approved the loan. Sandiford commended the attitude of the loan officers throughout the entire process, as they were extremely understanding, and listened to his opinion. Moreover, once the loan was approved, it was an easy process with no arising issues.

Due to this experience, he would definitely recommend the SRLF loan. He enjoyed every moment in France, learning the language and experiencing the culture. Corey is greatful that the SRLF allowed him to support himself; especially since one of its stipulations was that the recipient of the loan could not study and work at the same time. Sandiford states that the interest rates for the loan were the lowest at that time, and that you were able to repay any amount above the minimum payment, allowing you to pay off the loan as quickly as possible to lower the interest amount. "This was a great advantage, as most banks would penalise you for settling a loan too rapidly", Corey noted. Currently, Corey is a Research Consultant at the Caribbean Development Research Services (CADRES), and credits the opportunity to study a Masters as integral to his career, as it greatly improved his analytical and research skills. With determination and perseverance, along with good financing options, Sandiford thinks that any academic goal is achievable.
